This is a one-shot story I wrote many years ago I figured I would post it here. Enjoy.
“So what stage is that star in?” Anna pointed to one of the many bright stars that were visible that night.
“Just because I study physics doesn’t mean I know everything about everything.” Nat sighed and turned to lay on his back, staring up at the navy inked sky that held every blazing star in it’s place; glowing like a true work of art. He turned his head to face her, his eyes scanning each millimetre of her face and neck.
“What?” Anna tilted her head, raising a single eyebrow in suspicion.
“Nothing…” Nat smiled as Anna continued to stare, every so often catching glimpses of the summer night in her glasses. Nat eventually sat up, breaking the continuous gaze. He looked over to Anna who was mesmerised by every inch of the sky, studying it and analysing it with her slate blue eyes.
The silence was infectious; to break it with noise was like to shatter flawless crystal with a hammer, but he had to.
“I love you.” His voice was so smooth and soft it felt like velvet to her ears, a smile crept into the left corner of her mouth as she laid there on the soft blanket feeling completely secure and safe as his body heat radiated onto her.
Nat eased backwards and took his place next to Anna, gently sliding his fingers over hers and encompassing her hand in a warm embrace. She slighted her head, nestling her lips into Nat’s thick dark brown locks and whispered into his ear the words “I love you too”.
The night was desperately quiet, only a distant din of cars could be heard in the glowing town below, and the silence crept over the two laid figures once more. That day they had chased one another through the tall grass, mottled green stains tarnishing their clothes and echoes of laughter accompanied the memories they shared. As the Sun had set, Nat had placed a blanket onto the still warm ground and wrapped Anna within his arms, describing just how it was the great celestial body had formed.
Nat rolled over to meet Anna’s face, gently brushing his nose against hers, and as they had stared into the now jet-black sky, they gazed once again into each-other with just as much wonder and intrigue. “I wish we could just stay like this forever”, Anna flowed delicately, exhaling slowly whilst taking Nat’s other hand into her own. He offered no response, instead his eyes strayed deliberately over Anna’s soft features, before slowly leaning forward, pressing their lips together, sealing the truth that was their love for one another.
They laid parallel in silence, drinking in the atmosphere that surrounded them; the faint smell of pollen in the summer breeze along with the slightest movements in the grass that cushioned them from beneath.
“I’m glad we came here. It’s so beautiful and peaceful.” Anna whispered tenderly as she played with the blades of grass in a similar way she often played with Nat’s hair. Her voice was soft like silk, as she spoke into the sky. Nat responded with a single grunt; he was so tranquil, it almost paralysed him – forbidding the words to leave his mouth or mind.
Nat sat and watched Anna breathing beside him as he tenderly played with Anna’s brunette curls in his hand. He always knew that the way he stroked his fingers through her hair sent her into a state of complete relaxation. It was almost hypnotic; the way he made her eyes close and the troubles in her mind blur into a cloud of smoke, which drifted from her mind, diffusing into the warm air.
“Anna, why haven’t we done this before?” Nat turned on his side and rested his head on his hand, freeing his hand from Anna’s locks.
“Because beautiful moments like this aren’t supposed to happen daily.” Anna opened her eyes and tilted her face towards Nat, smiling up at him.
“Special, is special for a reason; the rarity is what makes it so spectacular.” She smiled after each word, small dimples appearing close to her peach lips which were slightly reddened from the deep kisses Nat has placed upon them previously. Nat watched her with such concentration that he could see and hear the beat of her heart. It thudded irregularly beneath her rib cage, just above – near her collar bone – the silver locket he presented to her laid.
“Well that was deep.” Nat grinned at Anna, who instantly began to blush a shade of deep crimson. She looked to the floor with embarrassment; romance and emotion was never her speciality – yet when she was with Nat, it seemed to pour out of her naturally.
“I have my moments, I guess.” Anna mumbled as her face slowly returned to it’s naturally pale complexion.
The night quickly progressed, the air biting at their bare skin as they laid on the hill side. Nat was slowly drifting into a state of rem, as Anna traced a single finger over the left side of his body, as he was lying on his right. Anna laid herself down beside him, leaving no gaps between their bodies. She continued to stroke him and listen to his breathing as she closed her eyes and breathed in his cologne. Her finger slowly came to a pause as Anna fell into the same state of rem which Nat had entered minutes before.
For hours they both slept side by side, undisturbed by human influence. They occasionally tossed and turned, leaving each other for colder edges of the soft blanket; however they always seemed to find each other after, fitting together like jigsaw pieces as they slept on what they would describe as a cloud; a little piece of heaven.
The slept for what felt like an eternity, after experiencing such a night that had only been witnessed by the night sky.
